Palworld fishing: rods, bait, and what you actually catch

Updated Verified for Palworld 1.0.3

Fishing spots catch Pals. Salvage spots catch loot — including legendary schematics. If you are fishing for rewards rather than for Pals, the flotsam piles floating in open water are what you actually want.

Rod tiers

Six rods across three grades. Each grade has a technology version and a better schematic version. All six share Weight 5 and Attack 25; what changes is durability and the size of the green bar in the minigame.

The schematic rods use Coralum Ore or Coralum Ingot in their recipes, which is a neat loop — you fish up the material for the better fishing rod.

ℹ️
Where the rod schematics drop

Not documented. Community references explicitly state that the three rod schematics are not sold by merchants and have no enemy drops. Salvage spots do list schematics among their loot, which is suggestive, but no source says so for these specific schematics — so we are not going to claim it.

The minigame

Cast where you can see Pal shadows in the water. The bite is signalled by two large yellow exclamation marks; press Fire then to start the minigame.

From there you hold Fire to move a green bar and try to keep it over the yellow fish icon. Overlapping fills the capture gauge; not overlapping drains it. Fill it completely to land the catch, empty it and the Pal escapes. The icon moves randomly and reverses direction more often on harder catches.

That is the entire mechanic. There is no line tension system and no stamina cost — if you have played other fishing minigames, do not go looking for them. Rods do carry a durability stat, but the loss per cast is not documented.

Bait

BaitTechEffectRecipeYield
Simple Bait15Required for fishing at all2 Aquatic Pal Fluids, 4 Red Berries, 2 Flour10
High Quality Bait221.5x chance of a bite3 Aquatic Pal Fluids, 4 Tomato, 3 Flour10

Alluring Bait521.3x bar size and +40% items10 HQ Pal Oil, 1 Cavern Mushroom, 3 Carrot, 5 Flour3

Note that Alluring Bait yields only three per craft where the others give ten. It is worth it for salvage runs because of the +40% item modifier, and wasteful for casual Pal catching.

Salvage spots are the real reward

Separate from fishing spots are salvage spots — piles of flotsam in open water. These are where items come from:

  • Pal Spheres up to Ultimate Spheres
  • Silver Keys and Small Pal Souls
  • Weapon and armour schematics, including legendary ones
  • Training Manuals and Technical Manuals
  • Skill Fruits
  • Dog Coins and Gold Coins

Higher-tier salvage requires the Powerful Fishing Magnet: technology level 62, 3 points, one Hexolite per magnet, and — importantly — consumed only on success, so a failed attempt costs you nothing but time.

Pals that help

There is no fishing work suitability. Help comes from partner skills, which means the Pal has to be in your party slot rather than working at a base. Partner skills were overhauled game-wide in 1.0.

PalPartner skillEffect
JellietteJelliette Drop+55–95% items obtained from fishing
GloopieSticky PrincessCapture gauge drains 12–35% more slowly when the bars are not overlapping (does not stack)
WhalaskaChilled Whale CruiserRideable; minigame starts with +5–14% gauge and fills +5–14% faster
Whalaska IgnisSame effect at 7–17%
SolmoraCharming FishRideable on water; makes it easier to fish up talented Pals
Solmora LuxElectric variant, also listed as a fishing Pal

For a pure loot run, Jelliette in the party plus Alluring Bait is the strongest combination available — the two modifiers stack against different parts of the reward.

Automated fishing

Two base structures fish for you, and both want a worker with Handiwork Lv1 — not any aquatic trait:

  • Fishing Pond — Tech Lv31, 3 pts. 15 Wooden Board, 30 Cement, 3 Cryogenic Coolant. 23,500 workload. 1 worker.
  • Large Fishing Pond — Tech Lv69, 4 pts. 20 HQ Wooden Board, 30 Stone, 10 Coralum Ingot, 20 HQ Pal Oil. 85,000 workload. 1 worker. The larger body of water allows bigger Pals, and the bait you supply influences which shadows appear.

Patch 1.0.3 added World Tree Holy Water to the reward pools for World Tree fishing and the Large Fishing Pond.

Spots and regional variation

Catches vary by region and are split into freshwater and saltwater. Difficulty runs Beginner → Intermediate → Advanced → Expert → Master, with the last two added in 1.0 alongside better rewards and a higher chance of Alpha encounters. Level ranges across all spots span 1 to 60.

Internally the loot is grouped into six zone families across 115 zones, so two spots that look similar on the map can pull from quite different pools.

What to do next

  • Get the Powerful Fishing Magnet at Tech 62 — salvage is where the schematics live.
  • Put Jelliette in your party before any serious run.
  • Read the Coralum Ore guide if you are hunting the schematic rods.

Frequently asked questions

Do you catch fish in Palworld?
No. Fishing spots catch Pals, not fish — there is no fish item category in the game. Aquatic Pals such as Croajiro, Fuack, Kelpsea, Pengullet, Jelliette, Turtacle and Celaray are what come out of the water, along with their Ignis variants in hot regions. Items come from salvage spots instead.
What is the best fishing rod in Palworld?
The Advanced Fishing Rod (Depresso), which needs a schematic rather than a technology unlock. It has 720 durability and a 1.9x minigame bar, against 480 and 1.8x for the tech-unlocked Advanced Fishing Rod (Pengullet). Each of the three rod grades has a schematic version that beats its tech version.
Which Pals help with fishing in Palworld?
Fishing is not a work suitability, so help comes from partner skills while the Pal is in your party. Jelliette increases items obtained from fishing by 55–95%. Gloopie makes the capture gauge drain 12–35% more slowly. Whalaska starts the minigame with a fuller gauge and fills it faster. Solmora makes talented Pals easier to fish up.
What does the Powerful Fishing Magnet do?
It lets you work the higher-tier salvage spots, which is where legendary weapon and armour schematics, Ultimate Spheres, Silver Keys and Skill Fruits come from. It unlocks at technology level 62, costs one Hexolite each, and is only consumed on a successful salvage.
How do you get Coralum Ore in Palworld?
You fish it up. Coralum Ore is deep-sea salvage retrieved with a magnet and fishing rod — it has no mining node anywhere on the map and no Mining suitability applies to it. This catches a lot of people out, because its name suggests it should be mined.
