Base Building

Work suitability in Palworld, job by job

Updated Verified for Palworld 1.0.3

There are twelve work suitabilities a Pal can have, and the level next to each one is either a hard gate (resource nodes) or a speed multiplier (structures). Get the gates right first — a coal base staffed at Mining Lv2 produces exactly nothing.

🔑
The 5-second version

Handiwork and Transporting are the two jobs every base needs. Ore needs Mining Lv2; Coal and Pure Quartz need Mining Lv3. Plantations need Planting, Watering and Gathering. Find a Pal for any job with the Work Suitability Finder.

Verified on patch 1.0.3 (12 August 2026).

All 12 jobs, and what each one really covers

SuitabilityWhat it doesTypical structures
KindlingGenerates fire to run heat-based facilitiesCampfire, Cooking Pot, Furnace, Heater
WateringIrrigates crops and runs water-powered structuresPlantations, Crusher, Mill
PlantingSows seeds, starting the crop cycleBerry, Wheat and other Plantations
Generating ElectricityProduces power for electrical infrastructureGenerators and anything that needs power
HandiworkCrafting, construction and repairsEvery workbench, plus building anything you place
GatheringHarvests ripe crops and collects field itemsPlantations
LumberingChops trees and works logging sitesLogging Site
MiningExtracts stone and minerals from nodesStone Pit, ore/coal/quartz/sulfur nodes, Coal Quarry
Medicine ProductionCrafts medical itemsMedieval Medicine Workbench and successors
CoolingRuns cooling facilities and preserves foodCooler, refrigeration, Egg Incubator temperature control
TransportingMoves items from workstations and the ground into containersAll chests
FarmingProduces a fixed item per species when assigned to a RanchRanch

The thirteenth job no Pal has

Oil Extraction exists in the game's work-suitability table but is not present on any Pal in the roster. If a tool or spreadsheet shows thirteen columns, that is why the last one is always empty — Crude Oil comes from oil rigs and pumps, not from a worker.

Which levels are hard gates

These are the thresholds where a Pal below the number does nothing at all, rather than working slowly.

TargetSuitabilityMinimum level
Ore nodeMining2
Sulfur nodeMining2
Coal nodeMining3
Pure Quartz nodeMining3
Coal Quarry structureMining1

Note the trap in the last row: the Coal Quarry accepts a Mining Lv1 worker, but its workload is enormous, so level still decides whether it produces usefully. Gates and multipliers are not the same thing.

Which jobs matter most

TierJobsWhy
Essential in every baseHandiwork, TransportingHandiwork builds and crafts everything; Transporting is the only thing that empties workbenches into chests
Essential per base typeMining, Kindling, LumberingOre/coal bases and every furnace stall without them
The plantation trioPlanting, Watering, GatheringAll three are required for a field to actually yield; missing Gathering is the classic failure
SituationalGenerating Electricity, Cooling, Medicine ProductionNeeded once you unlock powered structures, incubators and medicine benches
Passive incomeFarmingA Ranch produces without input and restores the Pal's Sanity while it grazes

The highest-level Pal for every job

Sources disagree on the ceiling

One work suitability reference says levels "typically naturally range from 1 to 8" with 10 achievable. Another set of 1.0 tables lists Pals at 9 and 10 natively. We report the data-side numbers and flag the conflicting wording rather than silently picking one.

Early-game picks that are actually catchable

The level 10 Pals above are late-game captures. Before that, aim for anything with Handiwork 3+ and one dedicated Transporting body, then upgrade job by job as your Paldeck fills.

Work speed: everything that multiplies output

Pal Essence Condenser at max rank+1 to every work suitability the Pal hasCan push a Lv3 miner to Lv4 and over a gate
SanityLow SAN means slacking and sleepingEffectively a large negative multiplier
💡
Condensing can clear a gate

Maxing the Condenser adds +1 to all of a Pal's work suitabilities. That turns a Mining Lv2 Pal into a Lv3 one — the difference between ignoring coal and mining it. It is often cheaper than hunting a rarer species.

Sanity, and why a good worker suddenly stops

Drains SANRestores SAN
Forced work, e.g. via a Monitoring StandHot Spring or High Quality Hot Spring within reach
Hunger or starvationA stocked Feed Box the Pal can path to
Nowhere to sleepOne Pal Bed per worker
Prolonged overworkGrazing in a Ranch (Farming Pals), or feeding from the command menu

Sustained low Sanity applies a Depression debuff on top of the slacking. No numeric thresholds or recovery rates are published by primary sources, so this guide states none.

How to use this in practice

  • List the structures at each base, then list the suitabilities they need — staff to that list, not to a tier list.
  • Check every mining base against the gate table above before blaming pathing.
  • Use the Work Suitability Finder to find every Pal at a given job and level, then the automation guide for where to put them.

Frequently asked questions

How many work suitabilities are there in Palworld?
Twelve that Pals can actually have: Kindling, Watering, Planting, Generating Electricity, Handiwork, Gathering, Lumbering, Mining, Medicine Production, Cooling, Transporting and Farming. A thirteenth, Oil Extraction, exists in the game's data table but no Pal in the roster has it, so it never appears on a Paldeck entry.
What is the highest work suitability level in Palworld?
Sources differ. Some describe natural levels as typically 1 to 8 with a maximum achievable of 10, while other 1.0 tables list several Pals at 9 and 10 — for example Orserk at Generating Electricity 10 and Tetroise Primo at Mining 10. Maxing a Pal in the Pal Essence Condenser adds +1 to every work suitability it has.
Which work suitability matters most?
Handiwork and Transporting. Handiwork builds and crafts everything, so it is the bottleneck on every new structure; Transporting is what moves finished goods into chests, and without it workbenches jam and output sits on the floor. Mining is a close third because it gates ore, coal and quartz.
What Mining level do you need for coal in Palworld?
Mining Lv3 for both Coal and Pure Quartz, and Mining Lv2 for ordinary Ore and Sulfur. Below the threshold a Pal does not mine slowly — it ignores the node entirely and never reports a problem, which is why coal bases so often produce nothing at all.
Which Pals go on a Ranch in Palworld?
Any Pal with the Farming suitability, and the item it produces is fixed per species rather than chosen. Ranch Pals also recover Sanity while grazing, so a Ranch doubles as a rest area. Community references list which Pals have Farming, but per-Pal Farming levels are not published anywhere we could find.
Does work suitability level affect speed or only whether the Pal can do the job?
Both, depending on the task. For resource nodes the level is a hard gate — coal needs Mining Lv3 or nothing happens. For structures it acts as a speed multiplier, so a Kindling Lv10 Pal at a furnace simply produces faster than a Kindling Lv2 one.
