Sulfur comes from small yellow-streaked nodes in volcanic terrain, chiefly Mount Obsidian, and needs only Mining Lv2 — the same as ordinary Ore. The one cluster published with coordinates sits near the Eternal Pyre Tower Entrance at (-597, -519), with 8 nodes in range of a single base.
Volcano, Mining Lv2, heat-resistant armour. Base near (-597, -519). Sulfur becomes Gunpowder, which becomes every gun in the game.

Sulfur locations
Verified cluster
| Location | Coordinates | Nodes | Region |
|---|---|---|---|
| Near Eternal Pyre Tower Entrance | (-597, -519) — open on map | 8 | Palpagos Islands |
This is the only sulfur cluster either primary database publishes coordinates for. It doubles as a staging point for the Eternal Pyre Tower fight, which is convenient — the same trip that gets you a sulfur base gets you Ancient Technology points.
Where else sulfur spawns
| Area | Region | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Obsidian | Palpagos Islands | Region description names "Sulfur deposits" as a listed resource |
| Volcano biome generally | Palpagos Islands | Volcano loot zone drops 1–3 Sulfur at 11.9% |
| Dungeons | Various | Dungeons are listed as a sulfur source |
Exact node counts and coordinates beyond the cluster above are not published by any reference database, so this guide does not list any.
How to recognise a sulfur node
Sulfur nodes are noticeably smaller than copper and coal nodes and carry significant yellow portions across the rock. On black volcanic ground the yellow reads clearly even at distance, which makes sulfur the easiest of the three basic ores to spot from a mount.
Mount Obsidian is described as steep cliffs and lava. You need heat-resistant armour before a sulfur run is practical, and Pals stationed at a volcano base suffer the ambient temperature too — plan a Cooler or a Cooling-suitability Pal into the base layout.
Pals that drop Sulfur
| Pal | Quantity | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Pierdon | 4–5 | 100% |
Pierdon is the only Pal either database lists as a Sulfur dropper — and it also drops Ore, Coal and Pure Quartz variants at 4–5 apiece, which makes it the single most generous mining-material Pal in the game. It is still not a substitute for a node base at 4–5 per kill.
Expeditions that return Sulfur
| Expedition | Sulfur | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Volcano | 20–40 | 100% |
| Volcano Hard | 10–20 | 100% |
The standard Volcano expedition returns more than the Hard version, which is the usual pattern for base materials — Hard expeditions trade raw tonnage for rarer items.
The Sulfur Quarry
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Technology level | 46 (Ancient technology) |
| Cost | 5 Ancient Technology points |
| Prerequisite | Defeat the PIDF Tower |
| Materials | 70 Stone, 100 Sulfur, 30 Paldium Fragment, 10 Ancient Civilization Parts |
| Build workload | 30,000 |
| Work suitability | Mining Lv1 |
| Workload per 1 Sulfur | 8,000 |
| Power required | None |
| SAN impact | -0.15 |
Because it needs no power and no node, the Sulfur Quarry is the cleanest way to retire your volcano outpost. Some references list this structure as the Sulfur Mine; others call it the Sulfur Quarry. Same building.
All three cost 70 Stone, 30 Paldium Fragment, 10 Ancient Civilization Parts plus 100 of their own resource. Coal and Sulfur both take 8,000 workload per unit; Pure Quartz takes 10,000. If Ancient Civilization Parts are tight, build the Sulfur Quarry first — it unlocks earliest, at Tech 46.
Best Pals for a sulfur base
Mining Lv2 is the gate, so your options are unusually wide. These are worth the slot.
| Pal | Mining Lv | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Blazamut | 7 | Fire type — no heat penalty at a volcano base |
| Knocklem Ignis | 7 | Mining Lv7 and Transporting Lv7 |
| Menasting Terra | 6 | Solid mid-game pick |
| Reptyro | 5 | Volcano native |
| Digtoise | 4 | Easiest to obtain early |
| Turtacle Terra | 3 | Cheap; clears the Lv2 gate comfortably |
| Lovander | 2 | Bare minimum that still works on sulfur |
What Sulfur is used for
| Product | Made with | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Gunpowder | Sulfur + Charcoal | Every firearm and all ammunition |
| Corrosive Solvent | Sulfur + Venom Gland | Pal Metal Pickaxe and late-game crafting |
| Advanced / High Quality Medical Supplies | Sulfur | Healing at higher levels |
| Revival Potion | Sulfur | Reviving downed Pals |
| Polymer | Sulfur among ingredients | Circuit Boards and late structures |
| Sulfur Quarry | 100 Sulfur | One-off cost to automate it |
Gunpowder is the reason sulfur consumption never really stops. Ammunition is consumed permanently, so unlike ore or coal — which mostly buy one-off crafts — sulfur is a running cost for as long as you use guns.
What to do next
- Build the heat-resistant armour set before the trip; sulfur is cheap, dying to ambient temperature is not.
- Pick up Venom Glands for Corrosive Solvent while you are farming.
- Clear the PIDF Tower to unlock the Sulfur Quarry at Tech 46 — see technology points.
